Having Someone In Your Corner

As we marked the graduation of the 2026 Audio Academy Mentoring Programme last week, I found myself reflecting on the importance of having someone in your corner. Someone who has your back. Someone who asks the question you didn't know you needed to hear. Someone who helps you reframe a problem, reminds you what's possible, or simply reassures you that you're not navigating everything alone.

Over the past five months I've had the privilege - again - of leading this unique  programme, an initiative supporting people at a pivotal stage in their audio careers. Through one-to-one mentoring, peer learning, structured Action Learning Sets and

leadership sessions, we've created a space to reflect, build confidence, connect with others and hear from industry leaders.

As we came to the end of the programme, some of the most powerful insights came from the reflections shared from the group. Again and again, people came back to the same themes.

Community.

Connection.

Knowing you're not on your own.

Mentees spoke about how easy it can be to feel that everyone else is doing brilliantly while you're quietly struggling alone. About the relief of discovering that other people are experiencing the very same doubts, frustrations and feelings of imposter syndrome. About learning to ask for help.

About being able to speak honestly about where they were, without feeling that everything had to be presented as a 'highlight reel'.

One mentee described what a game changer it was to him having a whole belief system reframed by a peer by turning a question on its head.

Instead of asking,

"What's the worst that could happen?"

the question became

"What's the best that could happen?"

The one-to-one mentoring relationships have been hugely valuable, but so too have the group sessions. Together they've created space for honest conversations, thoughtful questioning and shared learning, helping people articulate the very real challenges they're grappling with, explore them from different perspectives and leave with greater clarity, practical next steps and renewed confidence.

In an industry that can feel fast-moving and defined by constant churn, creating regular space to pause and seek help is precious.

As one participant put it, it became a kind of "sacred space."

A place to think.

To be challenged.

To gain perspective.

To feel supported while working things out.

Working can be lonely. Freelancing can be very lonely. Becoming a leader can be lonely. The programme may have come to an end, but the support and the connections continue. Congratulations to the brilliant 2026 Audio Academy mentees, and huge thanks again to the amazing mentors who have given their time, wisdom and encouragement so generously over the past 5 months we never take this for granted!
