What area of the creative industries do you work in/want to work in and why does it interest you?
I want to have a career in digital marketing and I’ve previously done a creative and digital media apprenticeship at an arts charity. I’ve always been a creative person and throughout my education and work history, marketing has had some involvement. I enjoy using social media and creating digital content and as the industry is constantly evolving, there’s always something new to learn.
How accessible do you think jobs in the creative industries are?
I don’t think they are as accessible as they should be for those just starting out. It feels like the best way in is all about who you know, not what you know. But apprenticeships and programmes like Meet a Mentor are helping to improve that, which is great.
How important are mentors in the creative industries?
I think mentors are super important in the creative industries because there are so many different career paths available and it can be difficult to find out what’s right for you. Having someone with great knowledge and experience can play a big part to your success in the future.
What would you change about the industry you’re trying to get into?
Unpaid internships! The cost of travel, food and living in general needs to be considered and for an employer to expect an intern to work full-time for free is unacceptable. Thankfully, a lot of the internships I’ve seen are paid but not all of them.
Tell us one fun fact about you.
I broke my toe the day before my English GCSE exam, so I was in crutches and it was throbbing throughout. Doesn’t sound like a fun fact but I got a B so it could’ve been worse!
